Portable Power Station Sizing: A No-Hype Worksheet

Translate watts, watt-hours, surge, and charging inputs into a realistic backup or camping plan.

List the loads

Write down each device's running watts, startup surge, and planned hours. Measure uncertain loads with an appropriate power meter or use the device label and manufacturer documentation.

Add simultaneous running watts and compare them with the station's continuous output. Check the largest startup surge separately.

Estimate energy, then add margin

Multiply watts by hours to estimate watt-hours. Total the result and add a margin for inverter losses, temperature, battery aging, and loads that cycle.

Manufacturer runtime graphics are scenarios, not universal promises. Your load list is the decision tool.

Check the whole routine

Capacity is only one constraint. Review charge time from the source you will actually have, connector types, ventilation, dry placement, carrying weight, warranty, and battery chemistry.

For medical equipment or whole-home resilience, seek qualified system guidance and maintain an appropriate emergency plan.
